The Q in IQ stands for quotient, that is mathematical division or more precisely, a ratio. The original test was made up of tasks and observations made to see how normal kids of different ages could complete them. This allowed the testors to age grade each task. The result of testing a child against this standard gives a "mental" age. This mental age when divided by the childs chronologic age, multiplied by 100 gives an easy to understand kind of percentage score.

Thus if a 10 year old child shows a capability to do typical 12 year old tasks, the IQ is 12/10 x 100 or 120.

Repeat testing of the same children showed that the ratio of mental/chronological age usually did not change as the child aged.

Later work by scientists found ways to normalize test proceedures and apply statistical theory, but we still retain the concept that IQ score of 100 means a child has normal mental capacity. By removing the age grading requirement for tasks, IQ like test and scores can be applied to adults as well.
