Hey, i just faced this question about 5 months ago. I was looking for an older car to buy and to go through and rebuild, and in my search I found a 1970 El Camino, all original and in pretty decent shape (lower rear qtr. panels are rusty, etc.) but all the chrome is good, interior is really clean, and overall seemed like a good deal. Wasn't my first choice, but I picked it up for 1500.00 bucks, and iam planning on building up an engine and doing some of the body work this summer. My advice would be to get it, because like you I didn't want the monthly payments, wanted to be able to fix it easily(less wires and electronics to worry about) and it is just cooler, if you build it up right. Downside is the gas mileage, but i figure it makes up in the not having a monthly payment. If you get it, have fun with it man!

86's were pretty well cut back on their engines and their elegance. Mostly square boxes . You will notice that the prices for the 78 - 86's don't hold the value like other years. Use eBay and check the prices for the completed auctions.
Having said that, an El Camino (EC) is a NICE car in its early versions.
Consider the 73-77 version as a better investment. You can buy a good one for under $2000 and if you maintain it, the value will go UP.. not down. Parts are still easy to find and the engine was such a solid workhorse (the 350) that finding them with 300,000 and still going is not unusual.
Check out eBay for a wide variety of them .. prices for this style run from about $500 (Running but barely and a lot of rust) to over $15k... (restored and a Super Sport.. )
If you can find a 73 or 74 you are better off .. the engines were bigger and the smog controls were not in place then.
If you are in California, you can get up to a 76 and not have to deal with smog at all.. I don't know about other states... keep that in mind when deciding.
If you can, try to get one with a top on it. Tops are getting hard to find and are a handy option to have in the winter.
good luck.. dropme a note if you have any questions..

Did yo check the bed for rust through? I mean is there a cover over the bed that could be hiding a major problem? This sounds a little cheap for an El Camino?

MQ1: it really is an extremely good album. The album has better of a happier vibe to it extremely than the perfect few albums which had better of a dismal element going, yet nonetheless some sturdy rock and blues. The album wasn't a sadness in any respect. MQ2: Sister (Love the beat) BQ1: Brothers BQ2: purely were given To Be Love how they and few different band are preserving rock/authentic music alive!

Go for it, but begin looking for critical parts for it that might be hard to find in the not to distant future. Auto salvage yards should be good hunting grounds. Critical parts, such as lamp assemblies, heads, and other things that might be needed. This will depend a bit on storage space and how long you really want to keep the vehicle.

this is a fine choice for many reasons -there are 50 million small block chevys out there so parts are cheap . when fixed up a bit you will actually have an investment as elkys are desireable and it will bring 1200 easy. and you dont have struts, timing belt or cv axles that make front drive 4 bangers "FUN" to own and repair!

Free and clear and you like the car. Go for it.
Sounds better than making monthly payments on a Hyundai.

Yes. You should be fine. One question you have to ask is how much driving you will be doing. Gas prices are the only draw back to this vehicle.
