On the morning of December 7, 1941, planes and midget submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy began a surprise attack on the U.S. under the command of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo. It has to be remarked that the attack might have been no surprise as vital intelligence information about the imminent attack was not passed to the Navy commander Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and Army commander Walter Short. This attack brought the United States into World War II. At 6:00 a.m. on December 7, the six Japanese carriers launched a first wave of 183 planes composed of torpedo bombers, dive-bombers, level bombers and fighters, the most well remembered Japanese plane being the Mitsubishi Zero. The Japanese hit American ships and military installations at 7:55 a.m. They attacked military airfields and at the same time they hit the fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor. The Battleship Arizona was hit with an armor piercing bomb which penetrated the forward amunition compartment, blowing the ship apart. Of the 2,403 military personnel lost at Pearl Harbor, 1,177 were from the Arizona alone. Overall, twenty-one ships of the U.S. Pacific fleet were damaged and the death toll reached 2,403, along with 68 civilians and 1,178 injured.

Early in the morning of Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, Carrier based aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Navy Fleet at Pear Harbor Hawaii. Most of the ships in port were sunk or badly damaged. The air field at Hickam was also bombed. Total US casualties was about 1200 people. The next day, President Roosevelt asked Congress to Declare War on Japan and the Axis powers - which they did. Japanese diplomats in Washington were attempting to deliver a declaration war from Japan before the attack but didn't make it. The attack reportedly came as a complete surprise to the US forces in Hawaii. Japanese forces delivering the attack made several errors in judgment, the aircraft carriers weren't in port, the submarine base wasn't attacked nor were the ships fuel supplies.
The surprise attack greatly angered the American people and allowed the industrial might of the US to be used to produce war material leading to the total defeat of Japan and Germany.

How can you not "get it?" Dec. 7, 1942, Japanese airplanes flew over Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and dropped bombs on the airports, and most of the U>S> fleet killing thousands!!!!!!!!!
GET IT? Now how would you be influenced by that if your father was killed on one of those boats?
That feeling is what Americans felt....how they were influenced.
