He was inspired by the Cultural Revolution in China, he became active in insurrectionist Communist politics as early as the 1970s.

He became general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal in 1986. This party, after a number of mergers and splits, became the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) in 1994.

Since 1996 Prachanda has become internationally known as the leader of the CPN (M) military wing and overall leader.
