Don'tcha think that if President Bush and his "friends" had really done their homework BEFORE invading Iraq they would have figured out that the majority of Iraq doesn't want a democracy? The Iraqi's have lived their sectarian lives for thousands of years did GW think he could persuade them with his charm? These people are stil living an ancient lifestyle. They don't want to become modern like the sinful West/Europeans. They have fought since the beginning of time over who would be ruler, what lands they would occupy, and which version of the Quran to follow. Should we really expect change from these people? We are now convieniently positioned in Iraq so that the Iraqi's and Iranians can slaughter Americans at an alarming rate. When will our own gov't figure this out? Is VICTORY more important than human life?

being deployed there for the first part of the war, a lot of soldiers did not want to go to Baghdad, we would have much been home with our families. but as soldiers our duty is to follow orders and get our soldiers back safely.as for on the way to Baghdad, we got a lot of thanks and hugs and kisses from Iraqis who wanted a change and an end to the rule they had known their whole lives.i have had conversations with Iraqis who lived there their whole lives, so i have seen both sides.now we underestimated what we needed to secure Iraq and dismantled their army(bad move). now there is so much bloodshed and all that there is no such thing as a victory anymore, then again leaving now will only make a bigger mess.so there is no correct answer. we don't know what to do, but try, and as far as soldiers dying it is a bit more fair killing a soldier who can kill you on a battlefield than innocent civilians trying to make a living in any country.sorry for the honesty. i am now an injured Iraqi vet and trying to live in the peace i helped defend.

Well this whole Iraq situation is kind of like the threat of Communism to the United States back in the day. I'm sure Democracy might be viewed as a threat to some of the Iraqi's who see the Western world as loose in their morals. If I was Iraqi and not used to those viewpoints I might be strongly opposed to a democratic form of government. But, I really don't think that's a concern for the U.S. goverment which believes that democracy is the only successful form of government. Perhaps Bush felt that by imposing the democratic government it would be easier to have control over oil resources etc. It's interesting to step into an Iraqi's sandals and see it from a different angle. But don't get me wrong I am so against terrorism and muslim extremists...I certainly know that it must be brought under control. Don't confuse the two.

Calm down. 713 day til he's gone. (http://newprez.com/index.jsp?key=20070206PM) The Republicans will soon realize (by the end of the year, maybe sooner) that we need to get out of Iraq before they lose all their support.

And the Iranians aren't slaughtering Americans yet. Bush knows, or more confidently high Republican leaders, that we possibly can't go into Iran. The American people wouldn't stand for it, and the Republicans would get killed in 08.

So yeah it's disgusting and bad, but not as bad you think. When it comes to losing elections, people aren't that patient, and the Iraq wars continuation isn't helping the Republicans politically. The recent escalation won't last long. Soon (713 til), we will have a better president.

No one said Germany or Japan, both with rich cultural history, could sustain a democracy. Both of them are now leading countries in the world. People want everything to happen now. Well things don't work like that. Sorry.

Puh-leeze!!! Anything is better than what they had. And of course they want to be westernized. Everyone in the world does except for some hardline elders in the Muslim states. Nearly all from the younger generations want to buy blue jeans and Kobe Bryant jerseys and watch football and basketball and drink a Coke or a eat a Big Mac. The whole world is influenced by the West (mainly the US). Don't be idiotic. Like most Americans you need to travel outside of the country some time and talk to foreigners in their lands. There is a market for what we are attempting to provide and we have the supply.

An awful lot of people voted in the elections there. A higher percentage than vote in America. Doesn't that directly contradict your claim that "majority of Iraq doesn't want a democracy?"

Just how many Iraqis did you pole before you decided to make bogus and unfounded claims about their will?

The only thing that disgusts me is people who are so presumptuous they overlook the obvious in order to make unfounded partisan accusations.

That's just it my friend, the whole freedom is on the march and were gonna bring democracy to the middle east is a complete ruse by Bush co. He has no intention of establishing democracy. Only the 30% that still support Bush believe that hogwash anymore, and i think there all on here, LOL.

I totally agree with 'notyou311.' This war has destroyed America's goodwill in the international scene- if there were even any to begin with. What you posted for your details is totally true. I haven't even realized this point. Thanks for the enlightenment. That is exactly true. If they have lived like that for over a thousand years, it is very rude and highly inconsiderate of America to just step in and meddle.

I'm wondering if a people's initiative is possible here in the states? Like get the people to sign something that the Senate and the House would really look at seriously?

Why do you think for a second Bush & co. care a damn what the Iraqis want?

They don't.

They want the oil and don't care if they have to enslave an entire nation, and bankrupt their America, to get it.

Besides, for every day the war goes on oil prices climb and Bush and Co. all get richer. Every last member of Bush's cabinet have oil based wealth.

Iran is next.

i agree with you,.... we will never win a war in iraq because their people have nothing to lose. they have too much pride and their beliefs are too devout, they dont fear death as we do, so there is no chance of winning. you can not "modernize" a country with thousands of years of history/culture/religion. they tried to do it in iran and it ended in a revolution...im not sure what the new definition of a victory in iraq even is at this point, but i dont think it will be reached.
