That is because you are so young you can not remember when most adults smoked and throwing trash out the window would get you shot. That is a literal statement!
There are several ford vehicles that have removable ashtrays that fit in cup holders and in a few it cost extra for an ashtray!

first of all an ashtray is an option on all new cars now. way bak in the day all old cars like in the 90's all cars had ashtrays built in. now all base model do NOT come with ashtrays and lighters becuz stupid people trip about their car not being equal to everyone becuz they don smoke. so if u wan an ashtray in ur brandnew car u have to buy the smokers package which cost like an extra 50 buks.

Even if you don't smoke you can still use the ashtray to put other things like change in it. I don't know exactly how you would "put the space to better use" How much space does an ashtray really take up? I never even really noticed mine until I saw your question :P

These days, it is an option. Its called the "smokers package", and not all cars are ordered by the dealer with it. Its still pertty popular, though - the ashtray still makes a useful change draw, and the lighter can still charge your cell phone. The only difference is the change tray can't take the heat of a cigarette, the power outlet can't take the heat of a lighter, and the lighter itself is not included.

if you look in most cars from 1999 and up, most started to make cig lighters as an option or as just a spare plug for cell phone. you had to pay more for the actual lighter.
since about 2005, most cars now have done the same with the ashtray. GM vehicles even started to remove it and make it a side item that would fit into the passenger cup holder.
it is being ruled out of cars, slowly, as anything is done in society, nothing is instant.

Automobile manufacturers seem to be the only people that realize that smoking is a totally legal action, and include the ashtray for those people that also realize that it is a totally legal action. And, it has the bonus feature that it can be used as a change or key holder when not used to recieve the ashes from that totally legal action.

Most newer cars do not have ashtrays. my vehicle is a 2004 and it doesnt have one. it has 2 cigatette lighter openings but did not come with a lighter.
some manufacturers offer a smoking package where they install an ashtray and lighter. most of my friends have vehicles newer than 2003 and they all dont have ashtrays.

Ashtrays are not standard in all vehicles. My 1998 Honda Accord didn't have one. You had to order it as an extra called 'Smokers Package". My 2006 Honda Accord doesn't have one either.

In most new cars, an ashtray IS an option. Most have a cupholder in the spot where an ashtray may be added.

I thought If you wanted a NEW car with an ashtray, you had to request it. Think its only older models have ashtrays now.
