Or is there always hope for everyone?

This example is an analogy that explains, what is perhaps, the correct attitude or way of thinking that we can adopt towards those who we might consider a lost cause.
Those who are in touch with nature know that most fruits mature during the hot summer months. The heat and warmth of those months are crucial for those fruits to mature.
But there are also delicious fruits like "oranges" for example that mature during the cold and chilly winter months when nature seems dead.
Everything in life has it's own moment for reaching maturity.
"Those who think that all fruits mature at the same time as strawberries know nothing about oranges." Erich Fromm

Let's put it this way; there is always hope, but some folks are "pretty far gone" in their own way, and there's realistically not much chance they're going to change or improve. Change comes from within; you have to want it, and they don't want it.

I'm thinking here of a couple guys I used to work around. One was almost a complete misanthrope and a "legend" in his own mind. He would constantly say,"I'm surrounded by idiots" and be totally blind to his own shortcomings.

The other guy had almost a complete lack of organization and housekeeping skills; just a pig. Who'd want to follow a person like that? He just didn't care.

So, while neither of these guys were what you would call "evil," as far as interacting with their coworkers, they were pretty much a "lost cause."

I don't think anyone is a lost cause. There is always hope. Sometimes people give up on themselves though. It's very hard to help someone who won't accept help or has no will to get better.

i know what you mean, i think some times people are not a lost cause we just perceive them as being that way. sometimes people are happy the way they are, you are trying to fix was does not need it? other people have went down a dark road and you can't bring them back, most times they have to bring themselves back. make your self available, try to give help without being pushy. a lot times they will come around on once it gets through there head. there is always hope, just maybe they don't see it the same way as you think they should.

I believe that no one is a lost cause and that everyone can be helped in one way or another.

Yeah, there are a few. They can't be shaken out of their depression or chaotic state of mind they lose it. I forget, what are the leading causes of death in America? I know suicide is like two or three for my age group.

However, you never know who is a lost cause or not. Some may just disappear and you won't know what happened, and others are obvious and need your help. IDK. Just care enough to try no matter how bleak people's futures seem, thats all that really needs to be said.

No!
Nevermind looking at our own personal experiences. Rather, for example, look at those who obtain a law degree at the age of 70. Those who overcome a stroke and learn to walk and talk again. Those who overcome drug/alcohol addictions and those who overcame those while living with the addicted. No one is a lost cause - not even after they are gone.

i think anyone can be a lost cause to the people around them. nobody will change unless they want to and realize a fault in themselves... we cannot make them realize this or make them change. they are in charge of themselves and that's all there is to it. if they believe all is fine and well, they will never change, becoming a lost cause. the crazy don't realize they're crazy, ya know.

Some people have parents who never taught them manners or respect for others. Those in turn teach their children and those in turn theirs. Some things have gone horribly wrong with our society. (E.g. It used to be that in many lands you could hit your child in public, but now parents don't because of fear of being arrested and the general attitude towards hitting kids. Kids in turn grow up to be even more disrespectful)
