Absolutely fair. People fail to realize that there are consequences for what you say. They absolutely have a right to say what they want, however stupid it may be. However, you also get to reap the effects of what was said. It's not a "no risk" deal. People don't have to like what you say. I love how most of the Dixie Chick supporters here have no idea what "freedom of speech" means.
McCarthyism isn't even analogous to this. Please.

This is what I think.
You have the right to say anything you wish. If you are someone that is selling something, I have the right not to buy it.
If you say to much about it, you might run the risk of having someone beat the crap out of you, your kid, your car, your house, ect. Yeah, sue them. Big deal.
McCarthyism is something everyone wants to label things as. Much like everytime the US is in some sort of war action everyone hollers.. OMG OMG Is This Going To Be Another VIETNAM?????? It is called using Emotion Words. They grab your attention. I frankly don't give a crap what DixieChicks say. I will never, ever, ever again purchase a thing DixieChicks have any contact with. No albums, T-shirts, concerts. I don't care. I don't like Mr. Bush very much, don't get me wrong. But going to a foreign land and criticizing the President is just wrong. It wouldn't be bad if they were in front of 5 people, but THOUSANDS heard/saw this. No I don't think so, they owe the American Public more respect than that. Performers should NEVER forget who makes them what they are. The American Public.

I believe that the Dixie Chicks have the same rights as every American.
They have the right to free speech.
And, they have the right to criticize the government.
And, they have the right to not like anyone they choose to not like.
And consumers of pop music also have the right to not like anyone they choose to not like...including The Dixie Chicks.
So everyone who likes the DC's music (and their politics) will continue to buy their music. And the rest of us won't.
Oh, I almost forgot...one more right:
They have the right to be stupid.

I have this theory:
If I want to be educated about politics, I'll go to a campaign rally or a speech by a person whose credentials qualify them to speak. I won't expect them to dance, or sing or act or do impressions.
If I want to be entertained, I'll go to a concert. And, likewise, I don't expect them to preach their political rhetoric.
It seems these days that when someone has a little talent and we give them a stage and an audience, they morph into political experts.

i am a firm believer in history repeating itself until the mistake is fixed, and i agree with the new form of mccarthyism. even george clooney is pronouncing the media as "wusses" and cowardly. kudos to anyone who speaks out against the corrupt.

Not to worry, the Dixie Chics will rebound. They were just giving their honest opinion. They are already making a comeback.
You know it was an emotional time for the whole country. They were using the way they know how to speak out. I personally thought it then and now....Bush is an idiot to the 4th degree. Anyone who can't see that is blind or just don't care.

totally insane, I like their music, and we do have free speech...so they don't like Bush, good grief who does? I think they are experiencing the usual maniacs that act out every chance they get.
The same people that want to rule your life and beliefs, This is the same group that will bomb an abortion clinic to stop the killing, the same people who will beat a gay person because they are an abomination, you get the drift...the nuts.
