As human beings, we have an innate need for love and belonging, as Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs states. Spouses fulfill this need by standing by our side and offering us companionship and affection. People who say they don't want marriage have been rejected by society and try to be cool and say that they never wanted this in the beginning so that they aren't the ones rejected.

Because my wife is my absolute best friend in this world. Not having her in my life would be like not breathing. I love her. I cherish her. I cannot imagine any set of circumstances where my life would be complete without her.
If I am being blunt I would have to say that people who don't want to get married (or who fail at marriage) have self identified as lazy ba$tards. They are telling you that they are too self centered to put in the work that loving someone more than yourself requires. It's a lot easier to run a relationship with potential into the ground and move on (and that's what most of us do).
At the end of the day having a true partner in this world is worth the effort. And if you're not getting that effect for the relationship your in, I encourage you to get out quickly and find a better fit. Life is too short for emotional fugazis.

We need a companion in life to help us to reproduce an offspring so that we would have someone to look after us in our old age. But that's just my view as I am an Asian (a bit old-fashioned thinking). I think most people if not all actually does WANT to get married and have kids but they just won't admit it. At some point in life, people will want to settle down no matter what they say.

Having the husband that I have is like having icing on my cake.
He adds a sweetness to my life.
Some people never find the right person or the right time in their life.
Some people are fine just as they are without a lifelong commitment.....and that's OK too.

For myself, having a spouse, in my case a husband, is giving me someone to experience my life with. To laugh at the good, share the special, lean on during the bad. Sometimes its not all happiness and laughter, but that is what builds your relationship, learning to help eachother through the good and bad. I love knowing I always have someone I can tell anything too, and they don't judge me.

that is a great question! I think people get married because they want companionship and they are so in love with someone they want them and need them around all the time. when people don't want to get married, they are more comfortable being able to do anything, at anytime, with anyone. they are attached to the freedom that marriage takes away. they also may be scared to do it because they were in that position once and got burned.
