We have a digital lock on our home office door. It's been the same combo for a long time. I got this mental block and couldn't remember the code for the life of me. After several attempts, I gave up. Then it came to me about a half an hour later. Any thoughts on this?

Yesterday I had an awful panic attack, and I got a headache after the attack really badly. Just thought I would mention this.

Well, that is so common to me. And happens to me frequently. It's as tho the pressure of trying to remember creates a paralysis. Then later, when we're relaxed the info, which we know we know, will surface. I wouldn't worry about it. It's perfectly normal.

You may be under a lot of pressure now. Try to let go of anything you can to lighten up your load.

I just read your additional post about panic attack - and am not surprised.

You are under too much stress which can cause the above reactions. There are psychotherapists who deal specifically with panic disorder. Don't hesitate to get help with this. And as above, ask yourself: "Do I NEED to do this, or do I just Want to do it, or am I people pleasing? " The only reason to do things is to Need to do it.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah, that happens to a lot of people.
That is why I started smoking, or else I would still be there trying to figure out the code. It is a sort of break so I don't beat myself up.

I think older people criticize themselves too much for doing that.

Bill Cosby said something funny.
Have you ever went into a room and forgot what you went in there to get? Then go back to the other room, sit down and remember what it was that you went in there to get? Well, here is how to solve that. Place you hands firmly on your a**.

That is why, whenever possible, I relegate things to paper rather than to memory.

Here is a couple of mental tricks.
1. Turn a chair over. The next morning you will see the chair and realize you need to do something.
2. Visualize yourself actually peforming the act before you do it. It is really weird when it does happen. It helps out when buying groceries.

I forget my phone number and people look at me like I am some kind of retard. I tell them that I don't call myself very often.

Yah, I talk too much. So what.

I used to have panic attacks and I am not surprised that you got a mental block and couldn't remember the code. A panic attack is scary and sometimes it is very disturbing. I imagine that is why you forgot. Don't worry. If you can remember to stay as calm as possible while having a panic attack and that second fear doesn't kick in, your panic attack will not be as bad and will go away sooner. Remember your panic attack will not kill you.

Short term memory can become blocked when we get too stressed or have too many conflicting items going through our mind. I hate when this happens, don't you? It's nothing to worry about, though.

I just read the PS you put in, and yes, if you had a panic attack, it could well be that you are severely stressed. If you are, it will hurt you physically in the long term, so try to get some professional help, or start meditating now.
Good Luck!

Sounds like anxiety may be affecting you. The headache related to stress and forgetfulness especially at important times.

Take it easy. Take a deep breath, take a warm bath.

This usually this happens when you are tired and or when you have alot of things on your mind. The best thing to do is have plenty of time to rest and do some exercises. Dont be encouraged when people say its normal, such things are not normal, if this problem persists seek docs advice.

Let me get this straight. You forgot a combination, and then you remembered it later, and this seems 'weird' to you? How long have you been living on this planet? People forget things, and then guess what? They remember them! Whoa! WEIRD!
