In the movie, THE BIG COUNTRY, the duelling pistols are given to the Major by Gregory Peck but he brings them?

He brings them to Burl Ives ranch when he tries to rescue Julie. Chuck Connors finds them in Peck's saddlebags.....how did they get there? Did I miss something? or was it a mistake?
