I think it ends with the main character realizing he is too old to see the magical land any more. What movie is this? Or what book perhaps?

I'm fairly certain it's a boy at the end who realizes he's too old to re-enter whatever magic kingdom this was. But perhaps his younger sister can still go inside, but he no longer can. And it sort of ends on a poignant note of the fact that he has aged beyond the magic. Even tho' he's still a child, something has changed.

It is almost definitely not Narnia or Peter Pan, tho' it was almost certainly inspired by these.

I really don't remember a scene from any of the Narnia books that corresponds to this. Altho' if anyone knows for sure, definitely point me to a book, because I have them sitting on the shelf beside me.

I would guess a movie from the 1980s.

It's The Chronicles of Narnia. I loved those books as a kid and still love them today. The most read is The Lion,The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Here's all of them:

1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2. Prince Caspian
3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
4. The Silver Chair
5. The Horse and His Boy
6. The Magician's Nephew
7. The Last Battle
(edit)
In the book - The Last Battle it discusses how Susan can't go back to Narnia because she is too busy growing up and has stopped believing. At least that's what I got out of it. It actually says Susan believes "in nothing now-a-days except nylons and lipstick and invitations." But her siblings Peter, Lucy and Edmond can all go back.

l think it's Peter Pan (the movie). l'm not so sure with this since it's Wendy who doesn't want to re-visit Neverland because she's getting old. You said it's a 'he is too old to see the magical land'. Not certain if it's the same movie we're referring to.

I think that most children experience a magical land. Mine had do with this wonderful tree. The roots were like steps As a child, I used to climb down the steps/roots snd just sit and feel calm and peaceful.

Probably not it, but how about the animated "Puff, the Magic Dragon" movie from 1978? I don't think there's a little sister, but you can watch it here to see if it rings any bells: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3476801002597020377
