I just bought a modular home and the electic company turned on the electric today but when I got to the house the electric wasnt working , I flipped every breaker I could find and even had a neighbor come over and try but I got NOTHING . When I called the electric company back they told me it wasnt thier problem and to call a electrician but I dont have the money . Any ideas on how I could fix this or what the problem could be , we are not getting a reading on the meter but I figured its because its not getting power . I doubt it is an electrical problem because the house is only 4 years old and the last owner didnt have any problems ...........

First off, there is a main switch which is totally seperate from the breaker box. My breaker box is in the basement. My main switch is in the garage(basically behind the meter) Throw that switch (it is just a lever to get power into the fuse/breaker box.

If the electric company turned on the power then there is voltage to the meter base. Beyond that point it is your responsibility. Is there a service breaker that is separate from from your breaker panel. I would think that if the previous owner had no problems there is an open service breaker.. Look for what appears to be a larger breaker in your breaker panel. It may have a 60, 100 or 200 printed on it depending on the size of the service. If there is nothing in the breaker panel look for a separate box with a hinged door, The service breaker may be there. If you know where they live you might want to call the previous owners. The real estate company should be able to help you.

Is it a digital meter? If so and your not getting a reading then it is the electrical company. It is very hard to tell with a analog meter. Many homes will have a main breaker in a box all by itself outside the house somewhere close to the meter. I would check for this. Usually it will be a grey colored box - if you can open the box without needing a screwdriver it is safe to open.

If it were me I'd pull the meter and check the line coming in from the pole...Be damn careful. First take test meter and see if you have power at the panel. Pull the face off and you'll see the three large cables coming in from outside. If vou have no power there it is at the meter, or beyond.....If you have power at the cables then it might be your main breaker, the one marked on the lever with 100 or two hundred.
