Hi,
You have to play 20 RATED games to advance to show a rating. So don't play in the social lounges unless you are sure they are rated before you sit and start a game. After that you will fall into higher ranks (colors) at 50 point breaks. So, play well so you will start out at a pretty good rating. I really think it is so you have it down pat to start playing with higher rated players? This link has all the rating systems for various Yahoo! Games.

I am assuming you are talking about Yahoo card games. I can only answer for the game of Spades, because I don't know about the other card games. But in Spades, you start out as a provisional, after you play 20 games you will be RATED. Yahoo actually starts you out at 1500 but in the lobby it only says Provisional by your name, till you get your 20 games played.
