I have heard of some wild tales about coins, but this one is actually new to me. The reason there is so many die varieties, was the die making back then, as well as the materials used, were just not that great. They were still and actually still are learning more as time goes by. As an example, the telephone has come a long way from the 1870's to 2007. Dies broke easily and when new ones were made, they had a slight difference. Not all the people working at the mint actually had a lot of skills. Also money was tight for the mint and they had to make due with what they had. That is one reason why we have over dates. The 1870's were nothing compared to 1793-1840's. You can bet on it, no opium was provided for mint works. Not to say things didn't happen, but they did run a tight ship, most of the time. Anyone who did try to take advantage of things, usually got caught.
