Of course it depends on what your interests are, but the Central West End is a great area if you want to be in a central location in relation to the rest of the city, and it's a vibrant neighborhood with shops, restaurants, bars, churches, synagogue, etc. Of the three major hotels in the area, I'd recommend the Chase or the Parkway (Parkway is most affordable and new).

The CWE is a great area since you can easily get to South Grand (good ethnic eats and shops), the Loop (lot of shops, restaurants and live music). All areas are relatively safe, as long as you're as cautious as you would be anywhere, and I can say that since I'm a 28 y/o female who has lived in the neighborhood for 8 years.

Clayton is a neat neighborhood, but it's pretty gentrified, so keep that in mind. Like I said, it's all what you're interested in. Union Station is pretty touristy, as is The Landing; Soulard and Lafayette Square offer beautiful architecture and great restaurants. The Hill is great for grabbing a bite to eat (perfect for a Sat. lunch), and Washington Ave. (downtown), for the most part, comes alive after dark since it's a lot of clubs. Have fun!

If you fly in you can take the Metro Link to downtown the go West to Union Station. The Old Train Station Restored into a Mall and Motel & Places to eat. From there you can ride the Metro Link back downtown to the downtown stores for shopping.

Some parts of North St Louis are not so safe as is Some of the East side across the river.

I would also recommend the Central West End or Clayton. Nice hotels, shops, and restaurants, and easy access to other attractions (Forest Park, Downtown, the Landing, etc.).

Im from St. Charles, a suburb just north of St. Louis and Downtown (the Metro East) has a lot of shopping, but if your looking for shopping and resturants, I strongly reccomend "The Hill." It is and Itallia community that has an endless amount of Itallian resturants, shops, and history. It is unlike any other city in America.

St Peters is nice, you have Mid-Rivers Mall, The Galleria is near Clayton, Missouri. Nice hotels and eating places by Westport Plaza. St Charles has Ameristar Casino and quaint little shops near the Waterfront, there is a nice hotel by Ameristar. Hope this helps

For walking, I'd say downtown Clayton is a pretty good area for hotels and restaurants, etc, the Galleria mall is fairly close as well.

Clayton is a great safe area to stay that is close to downtown, U-City Loop (great restaurants/bars/concerts) and Central West End (Great Bars/Restuarants). Stay away from Westport. It's booooring!

Hyatt Regency, Union Station. It has shopping attached and is within walking distance of a lot of downtown attractions.
