As you already know, you should only use rainwater; alternatively, you could mix "Distilled Water" and tap water at a ratio of 10:1. If you keep the plant in a pot, water it in such a way that there's usually about 1 cm of water in the saucer. Do NOT use fertilisers! It kills the plant. If you re-pot the plant, do use the special soil that's sold for these plants, which consists almost entirely of peat and is virtually free of additional fertilisers. In summer, the plant likes full sun. However, since the ideal temperature for the plant is 15-20° Celsius, you might have to resort to partial shade if the temperature in full sun gets significantly higher than that. During winter, it is important to keep tha plant at a temperature of 6-8° Celsius in a place that's guaranteed to be save from frost. As it is highly likely that all parts of the plant above ground will die, it doesn't matter how much or little light the plant gets during that time. Do remember to keep the soil moderately moist during winter. I would advise you not to try to feed the traps. Especially dead insects are useless for the plant. If the plant is indoors and you feel there are not enough flies around, just open a window ;-) . The plant is not going to die just because it has to go without a fly for a couple of weeks.

Catch a fly or other little insect and place i gently in th trap. As it touches to hairs, the trap will close. One fly will keep it going for a few days, then it will open up again. Don't feed it insects that have been killed by insect killers--you'll poison it.

Since you have a Venus fly trap it is best that you have lots of flys around to feed it because it could die without lack of nourishment which is flys. :-)
