you have a 6 digit base 36 number The total liscense plates that can be issued uniquely is (36 ^^ 7) -1 = 78364164095 = ZZZZZZ base 36 (Ya it's a sleeper...)

With no spaces allowed (i.e. must contain 6 characters):
Combinations
= (36)*(36)*(36)*(36)*(36)*(36)
= 2176782336 (just more than 2 billion)

With the spaces allowed, it becomes:
Combinations
= (37)*(37)*(37)*(37)*(37)*(37)-1
= 2565726408 (just over 2.5 billion ... the -1 is because you have to have at least 1 digit, they can't ALL be spaces!)

Restricting the combinations to 3 letters and 3 numbers (in any order), and no spaces:
Combinations
= (26)*(26)*(26)*(10)*(10)*(10)
= 17576000 (about 17.5 million)

Up to 3 letters, 3 numbers and spaces
Combinations
= (27)*)(27)*(27)*(11)*(11)*(11)-1
= 26198072 (a little over 26 million - and no 'blank' plates!)

All of these allow some level of duplication; for example, the plate "_ _ A _ _ _" is not considered the same as "_ _ _ A _ _".

I believe that in a license plate you can use the characters more than once. So the answer would be 36 to the 6th power possible combinations (36 possibilities in each slot). And, that's assuming that all six slots will be filled with a character.

roughly 1 quadrillian^2 possibilities. That's why they let you have A-Z and 0-9 with 6 characters. There's a lot of possibilities

Calculate the number of combinations and permutations of 36 objects taken 6 at a time.
1947792 combinations
1402410240 permutations

You didn't specify if they could be used more than once.

If you completed the question, we could be quick. But you have something missing, such as if there is any restriction on the characters which are letters and numbers.
