The new Andrew Carnegie biography by David Nasaw is a surprisingly interesting read--I thought I knew the man, but I learned a lot. Jean Strouse's bio of Alice James, the sister of Henry and William, is also very good--she didn't do anything spectacular, but it's a vivid life for all that. Eleanor Roosevelt's Memoirs are readily available, and she was a fine writer. If you want something a bit trashier, try Cindy Crawford's Mommie Dearest or The Girl Who Walked Home Alone (about Bette Davis). Any of the memoirs by Alec Guiness or David Niven are also classics. If you think your life is terrible, read Get Happy: the Life of Judy Garland, by Gerald Clarke--you'll never feel sorry for yourself again!

My Favourite is Chuck Yeager's autobiography. You will find it an exciting and easy read about the old test pilot days and breaking the sound barrier.
You might also try Colin Powells autobiography. Not a bad and inspiring read.

I love biographies and autobiographies and really found "Letters of the Century" very interesting. Its a collection of actual letters from 1900-1999 from all sorts of people from politicians, famous, ordinary, authors, ect. that capture "America"

Use this link for the Steve Allen biography. He was a genius. He created the 'Tonight Show', wrote music and mystery books, other tv shows, and was a gifted comic.
