WOW! It's hard to identify something I've never seen, even with the descriptions. I can provide some websites with photos, that may be of help, though:

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/
http://www.cichlidtank.com/Resources/Profiles/default.asp?topsecid=3
http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/freshindex.html
http://www.elmersaquarium.com/000tropfishcareguides.htm

You can look at the photos and see if any look like yours.

It's impossible to tell what you have without pictures, but from the descriptions of the bold markings and colours would certainly make sense if they did turn out to be cichlids.

Cichlids come in many forms and certainly don't all necessarily share any trait - size, color, shape, behaviour - all of it can be opposite from one species of cichlid to another. If your hunch is right and they are cichids, they're probably mixed Africans. In this case all I can say is be careful - don't add any fish that aren't the same type, and beware of a lot of aggression as they grow and mature, and likely fatalities.

Go to www.cichlid-forum.com if you have any real interest in learning about these fish.

Good luck

It's hard to tell when dealing with black, white and yellow as those are common fish colors.Take a picture of this fish or fishes with a digital cam and send the pics to my email. I will tell you what they are. Thanks, jason (Phoenix Phish Care)

There are so many kinds of chiclids it will be dificult to tell if they are or not. Chiclids are usually only tolerant of other chiclids. They usually all have a similar shape.
