Hello. The only "Green" luxury car company is Lexus. They offer two Hybrid models, the GS sedan and RX SUV. These two cars use the same advanced Hybrid technology as pioneered by Toyota, but enhance it with the top notch luxury as only Lexus can provide. The RX is a bit more fuel efficent than the GS, but the GS is designed to be a more performance oriented vehicle. Good Luck!!

Diesels. My '03 VW turbodiesel Jetta Wagon AVERAGES 48 MPG and after 126,000 miles has zero disadvantages compared with a gasoline engine. Has heated leather seats, sunroof, power everything, comfortable for 500-mile trips, etc. Also, it can run on the new "clean" diesel fuels as have been sold in Europe for years and even on totally nonpolluting and renewable biodiesel fuels. UNFORTUNATELY, because of government stupidity, probably combined with pressure from the oil companies, diesel cars will be virtually unavailable in the U.S. for the '07 model year but are expected to return in '08. Much more environmentally friendly than much touted hybrids with their huge, toxic batteries that have to be replaced within 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

Keep in mind, the Mercedes is a diesel. It looks like it gets 20 percent better fuel economy, in reality it's more like 10, because diesel fuel contains more energy per unit of volume.
That's cars available in North America.
Top Gear managed 40 (british) MPG in an Audi A8 diesel. But that was driving specifically for economy.

Click on the link below. On the table headings click on 'Price MSRP $' twice to sort by descending. You can see the Mercedese Bluetec and the Lexus GS450h side by side comparison. Although the Merc is better on MPG the Lexus is the truer luxury car with its 339hp far above the Merc's 210.

The Tesla Roadster. Runs completely on electricity and gets the equvielent of about 125 miles per gallon, or 1 cent per mile (I've heard different things from different places). Unfortunately, it costs about 90-100 thousand dollars, so if you want something cheaper go with one of Toyota's Lexus hybrids.
