The world's tallest monument is the stainless steel Gateway To the West in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, completed on Oct. 28, 1965, to commemorate westward expansion after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. A sweeping arch that spans 630 ft. and rises to the same height, it cost $29 million to build. It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen.
