Most of them have a 1 year warranty or 2 years. Carrier sells one that has a 7 year warranty. My opinion is, if it is out of warranty I would by a new one. They are not that expensive so I would rather be safe than sorry for a $30.00 to $70.00 item every couple of years that could save your life someday. They also make a carbon monoxide detector kit that will check whether your detector is working. Check with your local HVAC company and they should be able to get one for you.

If it's plugged in it should last forever.
I have had one for the last 15 years and it's fine.
The problem with battery operated ones are that people forget to change the battery but a plug in is fine. You might also have a battery inside in case of a power failure. If that's the case then I would replace the battery every year or two.

Put it on an extension cord and stick it at the tail pipt of your car while it is running in park. If it goes off , then it works. Hopefully it has a auto shut off once it alarms.

It will usually start beeping at random times when it's starting to go out. This is an annoying...yet...helpful indicator of it taking it's last breaths.
