It's an assignment for my class. I need to know what I need and the costs to set up a server for a small business. It will have 50 users and the applications would be spreadsheets and word docs. I'm not much of a computer person, I took this class simply because I needed it and I have no idea where to start. Any ideas please! We need to be able to show what kind of Network Interface Cards we're going to use, what kind of Win 2003 server software, I lost any guidance will help me much.

If you wish to be different but provide the most cost effective solution go to www.clarkconnect.com and read the features of this server software. Features include:

1. Runs in Linux; no Windows Server 2003 or CALs required; this will save the business a bundle of software costs

2. Provides core server services: mail, web, VPN, backup, file and print services. One thing you could do is provide file service for all users on the network. A 500GB drive could provide 10GB of file space for each user. You could also use the server to backup everything.

3. Provides network services: antivirus, antispam, firewall, intrusion prevention

4. It can provide LDAP services for user management.

On the hardware side, Clarkconnect recommends a minimum server of 3Ghz P4, with 2GB RAM and at least 1GB of hard disk for the O/S. This config will support up to 200 users. Networking hardware should include a gigE NIC, a wireless NIC, a modem (for dialup service), and 4 port gigE switch and a 48 port 10/100 switch with a gigE uplink port. The server provides DHCP services, services wireless PCs and VPN. An attached laser printer can be shared by all.

If you REALLY want to stand out, you can download the "community edition" for free and play with it, learn it, and demonstrate the setup and interface for up to 10 users.

give it a look!

It's going to be a file server for word docs and excel files. It will have a Microsoft Server OS and set to share files to all other computers on the network. It needs a lot of storage space, like 2 terrabytes, and you need gigabit Ethernet cards.
