Thanks all for your help. I just wanted to add that I cannot use birth control, which is why I want to figure this out and abstinence is not a very good option for me. Try telling my husband that he isn't going to get any!

The best way is to observe your personal fertility signs - basal (waking) body temperature, changes in the cervical mucous, and even changes in cervical position. All of these will help you to learn when you are approaching ovulation, and when ovulation is past - and therefore avoid unprotected sex during your most fertile time. DO NOT assume that you ovulate on day fourteen of your cycle - this is absolutely NOT true for all women.

I highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility - it explains everything you need to know (and probably more!)

There is nothing to guarantee protection. A man's sperm if healthy can live up to 6 days. And if you possibly have sex say 4 days before you ovulate then you could get pregnant. This is why they make all kinds of birth control. The withdrawl method is not a birth control at all. Precum can get you pregnant. Use some other type of protection.

All women are different and all cycles are different, even from month to month in the same woman. If you are really interested in Natural Family Planning- you should contact someone in your area who is certified to teach NFP. It's so important to learn from someone who knows what they are doing instead of just going at it yourself. There are several different and effective methods when used correctly. I have been using the Billings method, very similar to the Creighton model, for the eight years I've been married. If you can't find someone in your area off the internet then check with a local Catholic Church who may be able to refer you to someone. Good Luck!
