Depends on brand, batteries should be changed out once a year.

How long does a Carbon Monoxide Alarm last?

First Alert alarms are warranted for 5 years, then it should be replaced with a new CO Alarm. SensorPack Modules and batteries should be replaced as needed for those alarms requiring them.

Incorrect. Expect a battery powered CO detector to last about 10 years from the date of manufacture. Expect batteries to last about 3 years. You will know that its time is up when the alarm chirps for no reason, and it's about 8+ years since you bought it.

If it's plugged in it should last forever. I have had one for the last 15 years and it's fine. The problem with battery operated ones are that people forget to change the battery but a plug in is fine. You might also have a battery inside in case of a power failure. If that's the case then I would replace the battery every year or two.

A very long time (10+ years), as long as you keep replacing the batteries.

I think what would stop them from working is getting dust in the intake.
