for a starter, get a squire (which is a cheaper fender) or epiphone (cheaper gibson) or something like them thats a couple hundred bucks if its going to be a starting guitar. no point in spending 400 bucks or more on a starting guitar, only to find out in 6 months you arent playing the thing anymore.
if you get really into the guitar a couple months later, then think about upgrading to a nicer guitar

Well, Gibson's gonna be pricey for anything you really want (can you say Les Paul?);whereas, you can get a Strat made in mexico pretty cheap if you are looking for that single-coil sound.

I guess if you are going for the more heavy-metal kind of thing and need dual coil humbucking pickups, the Ibanez line might have something in the low-end that is suitable.

Personally, I think everybody needs one Les Paul, one Tele, one good Strat, and then a few other specialty guitars (but I am a bit crazy when you consider I am not that good of a guitarist and own a bunch of nice guitars--smile).

I'm sure they all do.. Depending on your needs and amount of money your willing to spend. Try some of the inexpensive Fenders. The Squire might be a good start. They do make Strats made in other countries.. Lower end models. They sound great and play well.

fender if your on a budget, gibson if you want what you pay for, ibanez sucks with basses so i'd assume they suck at guitars also

Based on my experience in guitars, I highly recommend the Esteban.
