I don't want to use something corny like "boom" or "bang." Does anyone know something else I could use?

Could simply say something like the gun roared, thundered or bellowed

You could describe the sound witout actually writing something like "boom" or "bang." You could say something like:

...and as the gun fired, and the bullet was relaesed, I covered my ears at the noise that was like no other. It was sickening. It happened so quickly, yet I could almost count the milliseconds as they ticked by until the impact. I could still hear the ringing in my ears, later, as I thought about that moment. It was a loud unnatural sound.

Or if you're doing it from the POV of whoever was firing the gun (if they WANTED to fire the gun that is)

As I pullled the trigger, I felt a wave of excitement. You could say I was "trigger happy." The noise the gun made was like a shot going off at the begining of a race: this was to be the begining of my affiliation with (insert pshychotic organization here, whose sole purpose is to kill people ;) ). The gun vibrated in my hand as the echo from the shot reached my ears, a deep reverbrating thud rang throughout my head.

So, yeah...just go from there :) Hope I helped

Depending on the work you're writing, you could use something like " the sound equal to a clap of thunder" .....or " the deafening reverberance of an instant explosion" ....or "the instant pop of gunfire"..but it will all be for naught if it's written out of the scenario

I f you don't know what to use, then you should give up writing. Honestly.
