It depends somewhat on the scope of the job you are thinking of ie; BIG trees heavily trimmed and over home/power, etc. or " just a little off the top". If it's big the MOST important are bonded/ insured and a certified arborist. Make sure you SEE and COPY their paperwork regarding this. Failure to do this could be catastrophic, as, they lay an 80' tree through your house, doing 100k worth of damage and have 10 k worth of insurance/no bond.
Other than that, years in the field, and references are good things to know. If you are looking to do a major takedown (removal) esp. near home, try to find a company with a crane or at least monster bucket truck. Climbing and roping are fun to watch , but technology has advanced for a reason. One last thing, do not let anyone tell you topping trees is okay and don't let them put sealant on cutoffs. (where they took a lead/limb) Best of luck!

I had a tree trimming company trim 3 trees. They looked at the trees, offered recommendations on trimming and shaping the trees. I hired them and now the trees have a great shape and look fine.

Go on line and look up your tree. Garden club of america is a good source,. Some trees split as they grow and some times cannot be saved as other can be wired together closer to the top and are not easily visible.
Are you limbs touching power lines? If so, call MS> Utilily in Va or another company who work with overhead wiring. Many times, you will find that you cannot kill you tree or bush by pruning it. Good luk.
