I think Claude is telling Peter the hard truth which is if the heroes are not trained to deal with their powers their powers will ultimately cause them to kill themselves.
I think everyone you are seeing in this show is being watched and guided by Linderman who may be an immortal, the sole survivor of the last generation of heroes.
The eclipse that is coming will make the heroes even more powerful and make it harder to control those powers.
It has been a theory of mine that a signal is being transmitted that only becomes stronger during a solar eclipse. Assume, like in Highlander there can only be one immortal but in order for that to happen the other heroes must give that person their powers.
The missing sword could be both an antenna and a means to take powers.
I think Linderman is that immortal.
He is protecting the heroes to make sure no powers are lost until he needs them. He has been around so long that he has power and wealth to control the world.
