Does it even have meaning? This has been in the far, far back of my mind ever since I watched the show years ago. It really doesn't make sense. Can someone explain it please?

Captain David Bowman makes contact with the "monolith", to discover the meaning behind its presence. Although the wisdom contained within the monolith is seemingly infinite, it is not necessarily logically sound.
The monolith gives Bowman the answers he seeks (watch 2010: The Year We Make Contact), but must stay forever within the conscience of the monolith. The monolith had created a penthouse-type room for him to stay in, based on the data it was able to gather from David's mind. His idea of comfort became his home inside the monolith.
He died of old age, but became infinite and timeless all at once. This is how he is an old man when he visits Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2010.

If I am not wrong and many who have see 2010 will disagree with me the concept of the end of the original movie is that we can not see the forrest for the trees. Within the black monolith you find an entire universe that we as human beings have no clue even exist. If you think about it, it is an statement of infinity smallness to contrast the concept of infinite largeness most people associate with outerspace. Thoughts go to that of a black hole and the question of density and what it must be like in matter so dense that light can not pass through it. The monolith is a world unto itself able to visit other other less populated worlds and inspire them to do great things in time. That was what it was supposed to mean, and in 2010 they went one step further and spelled out a connection between where we are and where we could be.

Hey--- thanks for asking! I've always wondered myself--- I first watched this on LSD a zillion years ago! I thought maybe I was too wasted to understand--- but later I watched it again and still couldn't get the meaning. Visually very cool, though--

I like the first guy's answer---
What's your name?

Maybe a lot of the "heavy" stuff in that era really didn't make too much sense. I remember feeling quite bereft when it became known that the Beatles lyrics actually did not have lofty messages for our enlightenment, but that the 'fab four' sat around smoking and looking for words that rhymed well. Oh sad day!

I guess humanity has gone too far and has reached places that cannot be understood.
