I think this is an awesome quote! To me it means that you are your true self when nobody is looking because you don't have to worry about what others think and you feel brave to do whatever you want deep down inside because there's no one to judge you or critizie you or anything

I think it's absolutely true! True character is in the actual Being and living the truth that one claims as his/her own.
Does a person speak kindly to another face-to-face but then turn into a negative gossip behind closed doors? And letting loose behind closed doors does not define an individual's character as who they really are - it only means the person has not learned or practiced the values of self-restraint, self-respect, or self-discipline. just my humble view on it and a few random thoughts right off the top

That's a rather pessimistic outlook on people. It implies that ones true character is the worst they can be when they are not restrained by any social expectations. But I think that one could still have minor slips into badness, and yet be a good person. Perhaps, for instance, the guy who saved the NY subway rider is sometimes mean to his kids, yet he rose to the occasion to save a life. Is his true character bad because he is sometimes mean to his kids, or good because he saved a life? I think your character is defined by what you rise to, not what you sink to.

Every person has 3 sides to their personality/character/life.... Their public life, their private life and their personal life. Public life is the person you are amongst large groups of people - often a very fake version of your character, or what you think people would like you to be. Private life is who you are to your close family and friends - this sometimes depends on person to person, but is much more like your inner self, and it often depends on your emotions etc at the time. Your private life - the most important - which this quote refers to, is a reflection of your soul, your inner self, who you are TO YOU, and who you are before God.

I disagree with it's author. Some things should be performed when one thinks no one is looking. Perhaps it is the person who is peeking thats character is being defined.

It's true! It's also a little scary because I'm not sure that the real me is the person that I want to be.

I think it's somewhat true. Different parts of your personality come out in different interactions with other people or are more pronounced, but you're just unrestrainedly yourself with yourself.
