leaving it on even in standby or hibernate will cost you more, granted probably not a whole lot though. but powering on a system sends a large surge of electricity through all the components. this surge puts quite a bit of wear and tear on a computer especially an older one that may not have been well looked after. i leave mine one as much as possible.

Of course it takes more electricity to leave it on all day! More importantly, however, if you have a DSL "Always ON" connection, you subject your computer to hackers 24hours a day seven days a week when it is on all the time. Reduce the risk of being hacked by turning a computer off when not in use.

It does cost more to leave it on all day but it takes a long time to boot up.
Well the folks at Microsoft came up with a nifty invention called standby. It uses almost NO power and boots back up in less then a second.

it definitely costs you more to keep your computer on
but what you can do is put your computer on standby. This will keep the processes running but the power consumption of the microprocessors and other components on the motherboard will be as low as possible.

"Personal computers use about the same amount of energy to startup as they use when they are on for about two seconds."

Based on that information you would have great power savings if you turned it off when not using it for a period of time.

Well, I leave it on. When I first got it, our monthly electric bill only went up 45 cents. (Computers don't use very much electricity I guess)

I guess it all depends on how often you use it.
