I just got 2 female sister hamsters, and they both seem healthy. But they drink out of a little bowl, not water bottle, and their both of their butt areas can be wet, plus they have longer hair, but they aren't lond haired hamster, its just longer than other syrian hamsters. Is the butt being wet from peeing,or from them sticking it in the water on accident?

Does the tail area get wet from wet bedding? Or is this almost like a diarrhea with feces as well? There is a condition that is common in young hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, etc. called wet tail. You can look this up online: http://www.petwebsite.com/hamsters/hamster_wet_tail.htm. If this is what they have, they will need an antibiotic from a vet as soon as possible. Don't use the product called dry-tail - it doesn't work all that well!

Here's more info I found: http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/small_pets/hamster_diseases_general.html

If you can, it would be good to separate the hamsters, as wet-tail can be contagious.

Probably a combination of both, but as if its got to do with what u feed them out of. Plus with the long hair its like those goat who get dangle berries cos of the long hair on their butts, they'd just sit in stuff all day etc

take the bowl away, hamsters can get very sick (or even die) from a moist enviorment....they will learn to use the bottle, or let them drink from the bowl, then take it out of the cage., just dont keep it in the cage.
