This question gets asked all the time on this site, and hardly any answerers ever get it right. That drives me nuts.

PLEASE, trust me on this one.

In the US, people use the term "college" to refer to both, but there is actually a difference.

A college is an institution that has a "college of arts and sciences," in which there are departments of study like English, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Biology, Chemistry, etc.

A university is a larger institution which is made up of several colleges, including the college of arts and sciences, but also including (for example) a college of business, a college of education, a college of fine arts, a college of engineering, etc.

In addition, while some (but not all) colleges have graduate programs in a certain few fields, universities usually have graduate programs in many fields, and may (but not necessarily) have a medical school and/or a law school.

A college is a 4 yr school where you can obtain a bachelors degree and in some, a masters

A university is a group of colleges..the same definition as a college but an umbrella of more than one.

For those that tell you that you cannot get a masters at one just look to Boston College..it's not the case...There really is no difference..just that one has a group of colleges and the other IS college

In the US, traditionally the difference is that universities offer graduate degrees and colleges don't. However, many colleges do now offer a few graduate (usually master's) degrees. Some of these colleges change their names to universities as a result, some don't.

A community college only offers a 2-year degree (associate's).

In other countries, a college is more like high school in the US, while only universities offer bachelor's degrees.

A college is usually smaller than a university and you usually live at home while going to college. Universities are bigger and more expensive, and your usually there for 4 years or more. College is mostly 2 year degrees depending where you go.
