In 1947 a private pilot named Kenneth Arnold saw several UFO's from his aircraft in Washington state. He described their flight as "saucers skipping across water" and thereby created an entire sub-culture which persists to this day.

When the Zeppelin, dirigible, blimp was first launched, people who weren't anywhere near a site saw them. They believed that what they saw were blimps, even though there weren't any anywhere near. This was in th 1800's.
