As the title shows. I need to verify weather or not I am the father of a newborn that a woman claims I am. It is possibly true, on the other hand, it may be false. Is getting this done possible without getting a lawyer, she doesn't seem receptive to getting this done voluntarily. Why should I get a lawyer if I'm just going to end up getting a court-ordered standard child support payment plan if it is mine. Unless they can help lower my payments, I don't see what more they can do for me - just another expense. If they can help me in ways I can't accomplish myself, about how much would it cost?

Go to your local child support agency and request their assistance in establishing paternity. Don't let them 'stall' you because you're a man. They must, if needed get a court order for the mother to submit to genetic testing. You do NOT need to hire an attorney to do this the CSA will do it all at a nominal cost. If you signed a voluntary paternity form already--you have approx 60 days to recind (depending on the state). Run, don't walk to your local county child support agency!

Depending on who your agency contracts with to do DNA test--it can run anywhere from $150-$600. If you go privately--expect to pay MUCH more!

i don't know where you are, so i cannot give you specific legal information. That being said, if she wants to get child support from you, the first thing you do when you are taken to court is to ask for a paternity test. The court bears the cost for this. (this is assuming you are not married to her; if you are, you are on the hook regardless). If she never takes you to court, then you can have a test done yourself (between $500-$1000 here) but why bother? If she doesn't want money you don't have to do anything about this. Sad but true. I guess what I am telling you is to let her make the first move.

If she won't do the dna test for you the only way you can do it is through the court. contact a lawyer, If the child proves not to be yours why should you get stuck paying child support, In the long run your not wasting your time with a lawyer. good luck.

Simple...tell her flat out that if she wants a single dime out of you, she will have a proper paternity test performed, at a doctor that neither of you has any connection to.

Short of that, you tell the court that you are perfectly willing to do the honourable thing - provided the kid is yours, but that the mother is blocking your efforts to do so.

In any case, a basic test is a simple blood test. If the typing matches you may be, if it doesn't, you aren't. For the genetic testing, it will cost about $500-$1000.

Courts today require DNA before child support is ordered. every state is different (slightly) about these matters, so i would look up your states guidelines and laws.

links below; one is a child support calculator; just click on your state and fill it in. this will give you a general idea as to what will be ordered. the rest of the links are to help answer your questions; just click on your state and find the section you need.

The easy answer is to contact your local Planned Parenthood or ACLU and ask them.
