I'm not positive. Perhaps it was from Hamburg, Germany. Lots of good stuff came from Germany (e.g. Porsche!).

Yes, it has some relation to Hamburg Germany.
My understanding of where hamburger come from is from the French.
The French love their steak tar-tar, (raw minced steak), the the Hamburger liked theirs cooked, smacked into a patty. Known the French as Steak a-la hamburger.

yeah, its from hamburg germany. It's such a german type of food when u think about it. Mcdonalds, burger king, wendy's, etc, (all that stuff is known as the burger wars) they're waht made it a big deal in the USA

yes theres a relation to hamburg germany. there was this chef in hamburg who served these meatballs, and apparently he got mad and flattened one with a spatula and served it to a customer who happened to b american and he put it in a sandwich and brought the idea back... thats what the legend says... i think the american guy probly was in a hurry and flattened it and put it in a sandwich himself. or something like that.
