k, I'm back. Now with your question, I think you were misled with your intuitions. First, Filipinos love to travel. Second, They are not poor. They spend so much money and time to earn a college education. Then seek employment. After a while, because of high forex rate, they seek employment abroad. These people are already employed in here but seek a better prospect of higher returns of their time and efforts.
Its like the foreign capitalists who come to the Philippines to invest their money because of the prospects of higher rate of returns of their investments.
Filipinos who are able to go abroad are definitely not poor, if you think they are. The poor are the ones who cannot afford to go abroad.
And it is not only in America where there are Filipino nurses. There are so too many in London, Middle East, and soon Japan. The Philippines will keep on producing quality trained- nurses because population of some countries of the world are slowly becoming older and they have no young generations to take care for them.
We, Filipinos will go anywhere for as long as the price is right.

"that they as doctors should be able to tell a nurse how to do in the first place?" -Hey, if you have ever worked in a hospital setting, you will realize that there are a lot of things that nurses do a lot better than doctors. The days when nurses looked up to doctors as gods are sooo over (well, since the 80s it has been like this). We do our job, they do theirs. Turn off that ER episode, that crapp is misinforming. So why do doctors in the philippines go back to the bookshelves to become nurses? Because of the fact that Filipino doctors (well, most of them) are no compensated enough for their work. They never starve or anything, it's just that the prestige of being a medical doctor in the Philippines is gone. Now, Philippine educated nurses on the other hand have better chances of getting to travel to the west and earn as much as 4-6 times what a doctor in Manila would make. In the end, it's all about the Benjamins. I know a Filipino surgeon who has been practicing for 20 years (he's almost 50 now) in a major hospital in Las Pinas. He too hit the books and studied to become a nurse... unthinkable in the United States isn't it?

not at all, it shows that:
filipino nurses are one of the most caring people that they even care for those whom they are not blood-related; (ever wondered why a lot of american males take filipina nurses as wives? our women make very good homemakers.)
filipino nurses are one of the most hygenic in their field;
filipinos nurses are industrious and can endure in almost any kind of environment; (we have nurses working almost every continent)
filipino nurses are globally competetive because of the semi-rigid upbringing in their home country (i.e., moral values) and because of the affordable educational system which is basically english-based.
philippines in never a poor country; we just choose to work abroad because we have the opportunity, the skills, and most especially the guts to work anywhere.

i am a nurse..
and the basic reason why filipinos work as nurses in the US is because we supply the workforce demand of the country... there's an alarming shortage of this profession...
with the promising salary offer... as much as we want to stay with our families despite the economic adversities, we have to accept the opprtunity for the sake of our family/country's future...
to venomous why dont you check it, most medical professionals (not only nurses) in your country is not native to the USA, ever wonder why?
one thing im sure about : filipinos, indians, africans, latinos, mid-easterns, chinese, japanese, and other asian nationals... has a higher IQ average than y'all... not to mention the "innate ability" to be humble and non-judgmental.
one more thing venomous: whenever you need the ER help and you fell into the hand of a filipino nurse, we would still help you.. i personally don't mind helping you! seriously!

Having a lot of nurses here in United States and anywhere else in the world shows that Filipino are world class nurses, they are hard working people, they can tolerate adversities, and they sacrifice from being away from home so they can better their life and help their family to better theirs. Let's face it, Philippines is will be a 3rd world country, this will not change. For Pilipino to aspire and ddream of going overseas to better their lives I say to them GOD BLESS and MABUHAY PHILIPPINES

It shows that nursing is a hard job, and that lazy Americans don't want to do it. Many companies and hospitals actively recruit nurses from abroad, especially poorer countries like the Phillipines, b/c they know they are hard workers. In fact, since nurses in the US make more than physicians in the Phillipines, and getting a work visa to be a nurse is easier than getting one to be a physician, many filipino physicians will take a nursing job here.

To be short, job is guarenteed when u graduate, along with healthcare insurance, and you could work 3 days a week and still make enough.. you could work more depending on your situation. Another thing, most places also pay your tuition when u graduate if u sign a contract with their hospital. Filipinos realize that this is a very benifical in many ways.

But mind you people in America, most Filipinos in the US indeed work as a nurse, one of the most despicable jobs as you guys may think, yet those overseas fellows o' mine get to own luxurious houses, few others own mansions, here in the Philippines. Most of them send dollars back home or for their relatives to set up family businesses, or to buy them luxurious cars, or send the youngs to a nursing school. Those Filipinos are thinking about retiring soon and finally live a happy and affluent life back home. Most Filipinos abroad I know still hope to retire here as most of them wanna have the "Pinoy" sense of happiness they can never find elsewhere in other countries, but they make sure they have more than enough upon retirement that's why these guys work abroad. To sum it up, US is one of the Philippines' milking cows along with other countries like UK, Japan, Canada and several others. And here's one to perhaps "scare off" y'all, those Filipino nurses, who would choose only to work in the US if they can bring along their spouses and kids, send their kids to the best schools in the US and earn degrees in engineering, medicine, business among other fields of knowledge. In the next ten years or so, as has been forecasted, my fellow Filipinos, like Indians and Chinese do, will be "taking away" jobs from Americans. Filipinos, Indians and Chinese may not be as good as Americans in any high-level occupation but these guys continuously are thinking and doing about upgrading their skills and knowledge to soon dominate the workforce, not only in the US, but also elsewhere in the world. One indication is that, China has since regained its reputation from being "The Sleeping Giant" to "The Dragon of Asia" from the time she opened her doors to free trade. India was recently speculated by American economists to be the next "dragon." So with that in mind, I don't think it would be that impossible for the Philippines to earn soon a monicker like "The Buffalo of Asia." Buffalo appears to fit well for the Philippines, hardworking and a real survivor, whaddayathink?

yup.life is a bit hard in the philippines. the government doesn't provide the basic social services for its citizens so people have to find ways and means to survive. one of it is to live abroad, taking up nursing is one of the surest and fastest way to get there. since the US has a high demand for carers and nurses.
to venomous, don't be a racist. if filipinos have a choice, they wouldn't stay in your country. it's not a good place to be where people like you abound...
