I have a 86' Jeep Cherokee with a 2.8L i am rebuilding the engine and i came across that you could put the parts from a 3.1L and increse the displacement. is this true if so what am i looking at?

yes you can there basically the same engine just different cubic inches ,but all of the parts will inter change ,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Stroke was increased by 8mm to create the 3.1 from the 2.8.
The 2.8 is actually a GM LR2 engine.and was also used in the Chevy S10 Blazer. GM sells a crate 3.4 motor (92 vs 89mm bore) that is designed as a direct-fit replacement for the old TB injected 2.8 in the S10 Blazer (you can probably find it through places like Jegs.com) and this should work for your Jeep as well. I would imagine the engine and installation should be very similar between the two. It offers a substantial HP increase.

to elaborate on what dodgeman is saying, you can increase the engine bore size by boring out the cylinders,
or stroke the crankshaft ( more up and down motion )
both of these methods will increase liters
