Look a smaller goldfish with a pointed tail is male and bigger female. You have to keep 3 pairs of goldfish because like us g oldfishes have a right to chose their own mate.

a difficult task at best but there are a few ways to help determine the sex of your fish. It is a most difficult task on fry less than a year old, but as a general rule, females are likely to be bigger than the males of the same age. When they reach spawning age, and the eggs begin to mature in the female fish, she will thicken in the ventral area. At the same time, the male will start to develop small white tubercles on his gill plates and on the leading rays of his fins, particularly on the first ray of the pectoral fin which can usually be detected on fish with head growth.

Then there is the anal opening. With practice, so I'm told you can distinguish the difference between the sexes. Below are pictures of the anal opening of the male and female goldfish. These differences become much more apparent as spawning time approaches.

A & B are the female anal openings. They are larger, protrude slightly and is round in shape. The anal fin is thicker and has a heavier first anal fin spine.

Commons don't breed until they are 3-4 inches. You need to cycle the tank and buy a test kit for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. AFTER the tank is cycled, you can add fish. There should be 30 gallons for each common goldfish. The males will have little white dots on their gills when they are ready to breed, not to be confused with ick spots on the rest of their body. The females will have more of a bumb where the anal fin is and it may look like there is an extra scale sticking out in front of the anal fin. There is NO other way to tell if a goldfish is male or female by physical traits (unless the girl lays eggs). In the cycled tank, when the fish are old enough, you can start raising the temperature slowly to 76 or so. If the fish are ready to breed the male will get tubercles and start chasing the female. This may take a while, there is no sure way to tell when she has eggs and there is no sure way to get them to breed. They breed in their own time. When the eggs are laid, get them out of the tank fast, because the goldfish can eat them all in minutes.

3 weeks is an awfully short time for a tank to cycle, unless you had media from an established tank to get it going. You did cycle it with an ammonia source, right? Also, a 20 gallon is okay for a single fancy goldfish, but not a comet--they need at least 50 gallons with double or triple filtration. Many of the "feeder" (common/comet) goldfish at pet stores are sick anyway, because of the conditions they're kept in. Did you notice any symptoms before the fish died--lethargy, gasping for air, paleness, etc.?
