Anathema and Katatonia have a lot of depressing songs in the mix of death, past love, neglect, etc. with a very melancholic tone if thats what your loooking for. (only their newer stuff because their very early stuff is death/doom metal but are also depressing.)

Here are some good songs:

Katatonia- Deadhouse
Katatonia-Saw you drown
Katatonia-Journey through pressure
Katatonia-My Twin
Katatonia-For my demons
Anathema-Anyone, Anywhere
Anathema-Emotional Winter
Anathema-Pressure

If you like them...you will like Porcupine Tree, Anti-matter, Team Sleep.....

If the more (main stream) popular bands interest you try: the cure, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, etc.

and if your looking for heavy stuff try listening to the arts of Black Metal bands
such as:

Shining
Forgotten Tomb
Judas Iscariot.....etc.
