How did slavery entrench itself in the British American Colonies?

The British colonists were generally considered backwards and hickish by the British once they set out to make it in the New World. In order to compensate for that stereotype, they had to create an image of something more savage, that they were personally civilizing. The slave, for whom racism was already being created, was the perfect savage for that backdrop.
