they both r from the same company but Gibson guitars are actually better cuz they have a better quality. epiphone guitars may be cheaper but that doesnt mean they r not good. i think if u r going to start playin guitar an epiphone would be a good choice.
i personally started with a washburn.
hope it helps

Both are awesome guitars. The Epiphone's use a slightly lower grade of wood, which usually means the grains aren't as pretty on translucent finishes. The electronics are mass produced and not of the same quality as a Gibson, and the frets are different. Using the Les Paul as an example; If you swap out the electronics, (pick-ups, pots, toggle switches, etc), and put a decent set of Grover tuners on an Epi, I actually prefer this guitar to a Gibson. For one, the neck feels "softer," and two, I can set up two Epi's this way for the same price I'd pay for one Gibson LP. And with this set up, anyone who tells you they can "hear" the difference - is probably lying.

Price and sound . which gibson are you looking at? I have an epiphone and was in the same predictment you are in. I wish I would have saved up and got the Gibson. I am in the process of trading my epiphone in on a Martin.

Gibson is American made and is of high quality. Epiphone is foreign made and therefore less expensive. Depending on the model, Epi would probably be good enough and cost you a lot less. I've seen professional bands use Epiphone Les Pauls and they seem to sound fine. Of course, they could have installed replacement pickups and tuners, who knows? As always, I'd try out lots of both and see what you like.

Epiphones are worth getting. most of the difference in sound is because of the different pickups. If you replace the epiphone pickups with gibson ones eg burst buckers the sound will be almost identical.

epiphone is a cheaper version of gibson. They are a reasonable alternative and worth the money.

For the long haul, you probably save up for a Gibson. It has a better quality in both sound and durability, and it'll last you the rest of your life.
