i have learned that new yorkers stand "on line", while i have been standing "in line" for my whole life.

I stand "in line". If I'm on the computer I'm "on line". I've heard people use "on line" to explain being "in line" at the grocery store and such and I just don't get it. I've even heard it on tv from news broadcasters. I'm with you. I stand "in line".

I lived in NYC and we NEVER said 'on-line' until the internet arrived.
