My Dr. wants to stretch my cervix tomorrow so that she can break my water. I'm only 1cm dilated so far, been that way for over 2 weeks, I'm at 40 weeks now, due on Saturday. Dr. wants to induce me because I live almost an hour from the hospital and she doesn't want me going into labor and delivering on the highway as this is my 3rd baby and she expects labor and delivery to be quick. My question is has anyone else ever had their cervix stretched, and if so, how painful was it. It's funny, but I'm more afraid of that than actual labor I think. My pelvic exams are painful enough, so I'm afraid this is really going to hurt.

Skip it. Why go through the pain (and increase your risk for an infection or other unnecessary problems). When your water is broken, you only have 24 hours to go into labor on your own. If you don't, into the hospital you go and you'll be induced artifcially. All this so the OB doesn't get called in to the hospital on the weekend.... tell her no thanks. Go home walk, have sex, and do lots of squats, squats, squats. If the baby is born at home, all the better :)

The further along you are and the more favorable your cervix is, the less painful it is. This is because the cervix is ripe so you cant really feel anything as there are no nerves in the membrane. The part that may be uncomfortable is the doctor reaching for the cervix first. I had it done on Monday and didnt feel it because I am 41 weeks now and my cervix is favourable. It hurts much more for woman who have it done at about 38 weeks or less because thier cervix is not ripe and not ready for it. If your really worried or scared you dont have to have it, as being tense during the procedure could cause pain and be uncomfortable.

sorry never had experience with this- but i would imagine it feels something like- when you are only dilated to a 1 and the baby is high inside and they try to insert an internal monitor on the baby. Dr's fists up inside your uterus do not feel nice-- i can't imagine it'd feel any better- I have to agree-- labor pains sound much more tolerable than having them 'stretch' your cervix!

stretching the cervix doesn't have anything to do with size of the baby etc. It is just to try to get your labor moving without having to use drugs. My doctor did it to me and it was pretty painful at the time and I was sore and crampy for the rest of the day, other than that it was fine. You are already over due and that baby has to come out sometime so I would just let her do what she feels needs done.

My friend had her cervix stretched during labor, and although it was very painful for her, she delivered very quickly and didn't need stiches (episiotomy) either because as a result, "everything stretched". It is painful, but I have been told over and over that it helps. Give it a try, it you can't deal with it, theres nothing wrog with stopping your doctor from doing it.
Good luck, and hope your baby is as healthy as can be!

It's painful... my doctor tried on two separate occasions, without any luck.

It's like an internal exam, only they go really deep, it almost feels like they're going to break your hips.

Just breathe deeply... stay as relaxed as possible.

OMG, where do you people find these Barbaric ob/gyn's? They seem to find it facinating to put expectant mothers in pain.

The pain is the same as when your cervix is dialating, same concept. You may feel some dull and constant pain in your lower back or cramping in the cervical area.

My doctor tried to stretch my cervix with my last pregnancy and it really hurt. I had to tell her to stop. To me the pain was unbearable and not worth it. Good Luck!!!

i have never heard of having your cervix stretched and i don't even think you can. she probably just meant that they are going to induce you and that should get your cervix to dilate more.
