You're probably not going to find one single guitar that will meet every player's definition of what's best. Though I can definitely think of some that deserve mentioning, albeit often for very different reasons:
Parker - one of my personal favs. Aside from being very light and being extremely smooth to play, I like the approach Ken Parker took in re-examining the materials and construction methods to come up with what they have.
PRS - maybe a controversial pick as they are probably overpriced, but they are still beautifully made guitars and have wonderful tone. From a personal stand point I find that not all their guitars are equal, and some have been among my least favorite instruments... but the others? That's what has them on my list.
Steinberger - mostly for what they accomplished back in Newburgh... all these years later they are probably still the most inventive guitar maker to ever come around.
Taylor - beautiful guitars! I don't know if I can think of a more desirable acoustic... and their newer hybrid styles are wonderful as well.
Now for the honorable mentions:
Gibson and Fender - I don't think either represents what they once meant to the industry, but they still produce a certain quality when they could probably go on with just their past glory.
Martin - the fire at the factory so long ago robbed them of all their aged wood, but they are finally reaching a point where they are recovering from that set back. Like Fender and Gibson, a legendary name, and one that still has alot of quality.
Valley Arts - I prefer their 80s/90s vintage... but they are still a high quality instrument.
Brian Moore - his work with Steinberger was better, but his own guitars still deserve mention.
Carvin - the odd choice on my list... but a company which has produced suprising quality while never managing to quite rise up to the "premium" list of many others.

It depends on the person. You should go to a store and try a few hands on yourself. Fender strats are nice for starting and Squier strats are very cheap starter guitars. A few very good guitars (these are high end and can be pricey but they're staples of the guitar world) are the Gibson Les Paul (one of the best ever), the Gibson SG, the Fender Stratocaster, the Fender Telecaster, etc etc. There are other brands out there including some that aren't big names like Gibson or Fender that are good. Ibanez has some nice guitars but with their high output they're usually only good for loud rock - heavy metal - neo classical type stuff.

Depends on what you like and what sound you're after. Electric or acoustic? Does price matter? I have a nearly 30 year old Yahama acoustic that sounds great and keeps improving, but only cost $160 at the time. You can spend almost 10 times that much if you want a top of the line Martin.

what kind do u want? acoustic, electric? what r u gonna play on it? i would ask a guitar teacher or expert. if u cant decide between 2, just choose by looks or price. DONT BUY THE ONES THAT YOU CAN GET FOR JUST $20! THEY R A WASTE OF $! First, they dont sound good, 2nd, they break super easily, and 3rd, even before you play, everyone will think that u r cheap, cant play well, or are REALLY stupid. Just DONT!

Electric or acoustic?
Fender electrics are the best, but Takamini makes the best acoustic guitars. Mostly it's personal prefrence.

Martin and Gibson are the best. You just need to find one with an action you like.

well for electrics, i like the Fender Stratocaster cuz its really balanced, kinda standard, you can do all sortsa stuff with it and it looks really fifties. slash from guns n roses used it in '67. if ur thinkin acoustic....well i like Ovation cuz of its manageable size, good shape, good sound, and it can be plugged into an amp. but theres better ones out there.

If you want something cheap, yet really good - get an Ibanez. They're built great, and sound amazing for their price (about 150 - 200 dollars). Have fun! =)
