G and L - The post Fender, Leo Fender company.Their legacy guitar is probably one of the best guitars in the world. PRS are also pretty darned good (I own a PRS Santana). Both companies only use the best materials and craftmanship. And whilst many fender and gibson guitars are great, PRS and G&L offer greater consistency with regards to the spectactular quality and tone of their products.

It all depends on the type of sound you're looking for. The obvious big names are Fender, Gretsch, Rickenbacker, Gibson etc. However, there are many viable cheaper alternatives around nowadays, much better than they used to be.
Personally, my favourite is the Gibson Les Paul, but if you prefer a less 'chunky' and more 'bluesy' sound, as many people do, then you'd be better of with the Fender Stratocaster.
Ultimately, there is no 'best'. It's all a matter of taste.

The answer is definitely Fender, but you will have to decide if it's Strat or Tele - a completely different experience.

I own an Ibanez, Washburn, Martin, Epiphone, and Ovation, and I prefer the Ibanez. That's just me.
