I'm not prejudiced against blacks or Jewish people or anything crazy, I'm prejudiced against Gothic and Emo people.

There are a few in my class that I have come to know (they were the first Goths and Emo kids I ever met) and I don't like their attitude or choice of clothing color.

I see Gothic and Emo kids walking around town scowling like the world is a horrible place and wearing all black, I'm naturally mad at them.

Normally being prejudiced is judging people by a stereotype, but all Gothic people act the same, right? They wear black, listen to screamy music, and have negative and bad attitudes toward authority and others.

Am I wrong in thinking this? How can I overcome it if it is wrong?

Don't overcome it. They are wrong and stupid. Plus, when you see them at a highschool reunion in 20 years you can say, "hey, remember when you acted all sad and wore makeup and thought you were deeper and better than other people? And now you're a bank teller? God, you were so retarded." It'll be fun.

You are stereotyping. Not all goths and emos act the same. Everyone is different. Just because they're in the same label doesn't make them all the same. Each of them is an individual.

What I think you should do is look past all that stuff and actually get to know the person. What someone wears and listens to doesn't determine their personality. Some of my music is sort of screamy. I love the colors black and red. I'm a nice person and incredibly perky. Big shocker, huh? Not really. Stereotypes are often wrong.
So stop judging people based on what's on the outside and learn what they're really like.

OMG!!! Chels!!! The SAME exact thing happened 2 me. My best friend is punk, and yea. She's RLLY nice.

Not AL punks and goths are the same. Like all the goth/emo people I know r really nice

Sometimes though, the things that they r intrested in involve guns and like blood and stuff, and it worries me. It worrires me because if they are so preocupied by this stuff, that they might actually incorperate it into their lives. They might start cutting 2 see blood and stuff, or attempt suicide one day. Even though it may not be true, just looking at that stuff worries me ALL the time. My best friend had a shirt with a gun shooting hearts out of it, and it kinda scared me, and i asked her if she wore it 2 skewl, and she said she did, and I don't feel like that would be an appropriate shirt to wear at skewl. People get kicked out of skewl for wearing anything involving guns and stuff, u know.

Well anyway, I think that goth/emo kids should still presue their intrest, as long as it doesn't involve violence. I think that goth and emo kids should at least dress "casualy" in public (meaning not too many dark colors [i.e all black]), and still be goth/emo, so people won't be so scared of them, and they'd be more open to them, and discover what nice people they really are.

You are wrong.

They do not all act the same. Just because someone dresses all in black or isn't happy, doesn't make them goth or emo.

Some are truly depressed. And as someone said, "can't handle depression..." TRUE depression isn't something that can be handled. Many people say they overcame depression, but they were just sad or mad. Not TRULY depressed. Not in the way that is an actual chemical embalance.

Why be mad at them? What do you have to say about THEIR choice of clothing color? I bet they don't like yours either.

And, open your eyes. Babies being thrown into dumpsters, little boys being kidnapped then BLAMED for it, little kids being raped and killed, people "hunting" people. All the wars....

The world IS a horrible place, and prejudiced people like you are who help make it this way.

You can overcome it by... getting a counselor. Or something. Maybe dress in all black and stuff to see. You don't know what happened in their life, do you? Remember, your life is good. Even if you think it is horrible, you haven't been driven to depression, have you?

Many of them have been. Some of them just like to dress like that. Some of them were raised being beat and raped or saw someone die, and turned that way. Not everyone is the same, and not everyone handles things the same.

Everyone needs to stop judging people based on first impressions and outward apperance.

I used to think almost the exact same thing, until this gothic girl started talking to me in 7th grade and we became really good friends. You never know what someone is like until you get to know them. Maybe they just like to wear black. Maybe they think scary makeup is flattering on them. Or they could be going through some serious issues at home. They could be getting abused, or maybe a member of their immediate family passed away, so unless you know every single goth/emo kid in the world really well, then I aadvise against making judgments about people.

This is just some steryotype that doesnt fit most goths or emos. Emo just means that your overly emotional but some take that to a new level and that level is the emos you see. Goths are just morbid and dark by nature. Before juding them you should get to know them and decide for yourself if youre right or wrong.

Its not good disliking a type of person based on lifestyle. True, those are some weird kids but with out truly knowing one its hard to be justified in hating someone.
I don't know what these kids are really like but talk to some or at the very least, accept them for who they are and for that matter, accept all people for their differences. People are people. Life would be pretty boring if everyone was the same.

You say "all Gothic people act the same, right?" Well, all "preppy" people wear the same clothes, right? All "jocks" like to play sports, right?

Because you don't like SOME gothic people's attitude, don't assume everyone who wears black or even calls themselves gothic or emo shares that attitude. And because you don't like someone's choice in clothing is a ridiculous reason to not like them. Sure, you have a right to not like someone. And you have a right to be an ******, too.

I understand, it bugs me too, just be careful. When I was in highschool, I preferred black shirts. Not because I was goth or anything, I just didnt like the way that light colors looked against my skin shade. Sometimes, kids would ask me if I was a satan worshipper, and it really hurt my feelings. Give a person a chance before you assume the worst.

I agree COMPLETELY with tusconhooligan. I was emo...

Now it is three years later and I look back and am SO embarressed! When I go home people look at me funny now because I am normal and my boyfriend loves to tease me about how i looked when we met.

What can you do.

Be prejudice, have fun and don't worry... they prolly are prejudice against you for NOT being an emo/goth/punk :P
