I have always been very particular about grammar, I don't know why. What really irks me is when I read a newspaper and I am correcting the misspellings.
I think it is important, not only because you want people to understand you, but also because it is the preservation of our language. If you cannot even complete a sentence, then how can you say that English is your mother language? I feel it shows intelligence, no matter what your upbringing was--just like Kings English. Plus, is it really that big of a deal to hit the "Check spelling" button on the top? I feel that shows how lazy society has gotten, that we can't even proof read our documents to find errors, we just click a button.
My biggest pet peeve is when someone writes "loose" to say "lose"--Lose is when you lost something and loose is when you have lost a lot of weight and now your clothes are loose on you. I had a friend that had a bachelors in secondary education that would write that all the time. "I wish I could loose weight," or whatever the subject might be.
I guess I have a soap box to stand on with this one--sorry to sound preachy!! Some people find it important, some do not, so I guess it depends with whom you are speaking.

Grammar is important because it helps people communicate. It's like the rules of a game. If everyone plays by the same set of rules you have seamless play but if someone breaks the rules it can cause a "hiccup." Have you seen the Visa commercial where everyone swipes a card and everything is working harmoniously and some guy pays with cash? That's what bad grammar does. It slows down communication.
People who speak well are often perceived as better educated and sometimes mistaken as more intelligent. I won't debate the difference between education and intelligence but I do think a distinction exists.

Grammar is important because efficient and effective communication among humans has a demonstrated survival advantage.
Improper diction, spelling, and construction distract the listener's attention, leading to inefficient communication. Occasionally, poor language skills lead to Og misunderstanding Thorg, and poor Og gets crushed by Mr. Woolly Mammoth's foot as a result.
After that, Thorg hunts all alone with no good hunters willing to join him. Cuz Thorg stupid... and Og flat forever...

Grammar fiends are the way they are because they secretly harbor a frustration with the subjectivity of language -- the fact that I can say I exactly what I mean to you and you won't necessarily hear what I meant -- and respond by trying to make it mechanical and logically consistent. Unfortunately, language is organic, and this is impossible.

Grammer is usually directly related to education. The more education you have received; the more likely it is that you will speak grammatically correct. If you are talking to someone and they are speaking with slang and talking like an idiot you will make the assumption that they are uneducated.

It's grammAr, not grammEr - it's just a way of presenting yourself neatly - you wouldn't want to look sloppy in appearance - and your vocabulary and grammar is who you are to the person reading or hearing it - it's just neatness.

My opinion: Grammar is important because it indicates your social level. If you think about it, you probably socialize with others who speak like you. It is one way for the world to categorize your level of education and socioecnomic status. Impressions and judgements are made to categorize people when we first meet them. Of course, getting to know someone is always a good way to break them down. Grammar is one way you reveal yourself to others. "Language most shows a man, speak so that I may see thee" -Ben Johnson
